Chris Ashton is bound for greener pastures as his transfer to Toulon has been confirmed. It is also proving to bring fresh opportunities for others, such as Nathan Earle, who is eyeing the opportunity to replace his position in Saracens team.
Ashton is leaving the Saracens team who is considered champions in the English rugby playing fields. Both his and Nathan Earle’s fates seem to be interdependent on each other. The young winger has played an impressive spell while he was on loan to the New Zealand team. As a result, the chance that has come by for Nathan to be part of Saracens might prove to be a boon for his career. (more…)
Saracens is not going to appeal the 13-week ban served to Chris Ashton. Chris Ashton got this punishment for biting another player. But the club has decided not to appeal against the ban. Chris was banned by an independent panel after looking into the said incident.
However, Chris is all set to leave the club. He has signed Toulon for the upcoming season. As for Saracens’ boss, Mark McCall, it was an easy decision to not appeal the ban. He thought that serving the ban would be the ideal scenario for Chris’s career. According to him, it will help Chris’s personality as well. (more…)
The Chief Executive Officer of English champions Saracens FC has refused to comment about his side’s chase of England international winger Chris Ashton as claimed by Brendan Venter, the technical director of the team.
Venter claimed a couple of days back that The Wolf Pack were closing in on securing the services of the Northampton Saints winger, who is out of contract with the team at the end of the season, leaving him free to negotiate with interested parties for his signature. However, according to reports, Ashton would love a contract extension to stay with the Saints for another season at least.
Ashton has been passed fit and is in line to start after his four week ban for the Northampton Saints against the Scarlets in their Heineken European Cup match. However, Chris Ashton professed his love for the Saints last week and also reiterated that he had not signed any contracts with any other side and was keeping the decision till the end of the season and at the moment, he was only thinking about spending some time on the pitch after the lengthy ban.
However, according to the reports that have been received, the Northampton Saints are almost resigned to losing their star man to Saracens FC at the end of the season and have already started to look for players who could replace Ashton in the side. The names of Miles Benjamin as well as Marcel Garvey, both of whom are out of contract with the Worcester Warriors at the end of the season have come up as the possible replacements.
According to Venter, who spoke to the media in South Africa while most of the Saracens FC side was there, a deal to take Chris Ashton to the club was nearly done and it would be finalized in a few days.
For the first time in a long saga, Chris Ashton has hinted he is considering a move the Saracens. The Saints and England star has been linked with a move to London for many months and it has seemed inevitable to most in the game for some time. The glamour of Saracens and of life in London seems to appeal too much to the winger and the move; he now admits is a real possibility.
He has made it clear that he has no problems with the Saints they are after all he says “the club that brought [him] into Rugby Union and [he] owes the club a lot.” Northampton, as a club, as a team and as a group of friends and players clearly means a lot to him and he seems reluctant to throw that away, whilst still appreciating the best move for his development may be to move to Saracens.
